NOTES

As the "Father of Impressionism", Pissarro was instrumental in defining the aims of the movement during the earliest years of the Impressionist Exhibitions.  Among his broader oeuvre, Pissarro's 1870's works are considered among the artist's greatest masterpieces.

Pissarro settled in Pontoise in the summer of 1872, the ensuing period marking a turning point for the artist, who until that time had not spent more than a few years in any one place.

"Paysage aux Pâtis, Pontoise, la moisson exhibits a heightened freedom compared to Pissarro's earlier works, and is characterized by increasingly delicate brushwork, softer forms, and airier palette.
